I made a quite important decision lately and people have been asking me why I chose to do so. I became a pescetarian! Meaning, all meat with the exclusion of fish + seafood, have been cut from my daily diet. (Contrary to popular belief, NO I do not eat dinosaurs, thank you very much, Mr. Allen.) It's only been one month, but I'm really, really pleased with how I've been feeling lately. My energy levels have gone up big time, I find myself feeling a lot more energized during runs/ballet class. I feel so light on my feet! Making the switch wasn't too bad because I never really experienced random cravings for meat then, and I still don't have the desire to eat it now that I cut it. My mental clarity has never been better, I'd like to believe.
One other reason is the health benefit eliminating meat gives. Diabetes runs severely on one side of my family and the other side has a history of high cholesterol. Good news is that fish will lower bad cholesterol and up your good cholesterol (which could save you from heart problems!). Your body will also be able to balance and stabilize blood sugar- which is assuring for me, someone who is at risk for diabetes.
If we're going to delve into the ethical aspect of things, I see pescetarianism being more friendly to the environment and to animals. I'm sure you've all seen the gruesome slaughterhouse videos and the footage of chickens being given unnatural growth hormones. If you aren't fully ready to cut seafood completely, at least you'll be making a lighter environmental impact than you would while eating pork/poultry/beef/etc.
Pescetarianism is something I do definitely see as a segway or transitional phase into vegetarianism, or even a step further into becoming vegan. I often get the "vegetables are so boring, how do you eat whatever you're eating?!" comment. Not all vegetarian meals have to be boring! You just have to make it interesting for yourself. Through all of this, my entire goal is to live a happy, healthy lifestyle, while still being able to enjoy different foods of all sorts. Last year, I successfully gave up any unnatural sugar for a portion of the year. If I can give up chicken and waffles and donuts, you can do it too! I highly encourage you to try something new health-wise coming into the new year. Your body will thank you later.
Off to eat my veggies. Stay kind and venture a little.

Coffeehouse salad was great, by the way! Even though I look horrified, it was great! |
