My Favourite Albums of 2014 (+ reviews)

2:10:00 PM

Of course, being the music lover I am, I'm obviously going to give you guys a little write up on the best albums made this year. Aaaaand for your convenience, I attached my personal favourite tunes off of each album. Enjoy!

Ryan Adams // Ryan Adams

It's a little weird how much I love this album. You might have seen DRA'S self-titled at your local Starbucks in the CD pile by the registers. I highly recommend you actually pick it up and buy it! Listening to the guitar tones sound close to heaven. If you listen close enough you might actually be able to hear the angels singing! Hey- it also got nominated for a Grammy recently! Congrats Ryan + PAXAM.

SONGS YOU SHOULD HEAR:
Stay With Me
My Wrecking Ball
Feels Like Fire
Shadows

The Voyager // Jenny Lewis

Both this album and Ryan Adams go hand in hand so perfectly- well, maybe because he produced this album too (insert sparkle and heart eyed emoji). 'She's Not Me' especially sounds very DRA esque and it can easily be seen as one of the best songs on the album. The album is filled with tracks that tell funny play by play stories that you can easily picture in your head. If you have trouble getting your day going in the morning, don't worry.. Most people have trouble with that. I pop this record on in the morning and I feel a little more energized.

SONGS YOU SHOULD HEAR:
Head Underwater
She's Not Me
                                                                          Just One Of The Guys

Lost In The Dream // The War On Drugs

I've seen this album on almost every album review list I've read in the past couple days... and that says something. If you're into heavy synth sounds and hazy tunes, this record is absolutely perfect for you. This album is my favourite to listen to laying in bed with the lights off + drowning out the night road while driving- no singing, just me, the road and this record.

SONGS YOU SHOULD HEAR:
Under The Pressure
Red Eyes
An Ocean Between The Waves

#000000 & #FFFFFF // The Neighborhood

Now, now. I know what you're probably thinking. A rap record making your list? Yeah, actually. The whole vibe of this album is incredible; quite haunting and maybe a little scary, but incredible. The first time I lay listening to it in the middle of the night, I was kind of frightened to be completely honest. Je$$e's smooth voice compliments the collaborative raps so well and ties the whole mixtape together. Like a proper mixtape, there really is no 'cut' between each track- they all flow into each other.

SONGS YOU SHOULD HEAR:
When I Get Back ft. G-Eazy
1 Of Those Weaks
Lurk

High Noon // Arkells

I mean- who the f- uses a payphone? You'll understand once you listen to the album. I read a spot on review saying:

"If there’s anything that Arkells do well, it is that they are the masters of the big, booming chorus."

And yes, they have done it again. After their last album Michigan Left, I wasn't quite sure if they'd beat the hype or stylistic matter of that record. It's very very easy to say that they proved me wrong. I can't wait to see what the Arkells have up for them in 2015.

SONGS YOU SHOULD HEAR:
Leather Jacket
11:11
Never Thought That This Would Happen
Systematic

Language & Perspective // Bad Suns

I don't think I've ever heard a voice like Christo Bowman's until I heard Christo Bowman's. If you haven't already picked up on their music, you may remember them opening with Sir Sly on The 1975 spring tour. I bought their EP and basically was a waking advertisement, telling everyone to "listen to the Bad Suns before they get huge". And what do you know.. they got huge. So, if you haven't already... listen to the Bad Suns before they get huge-r.

SONGS YOU SHOULD HEAR:
Salt
Dancing On Quicksand
Cardiac Arrest
We Move Like The Ocean
Sleep Paralysis

Something To Someone EP // Strangers You Know

Okay, I'll be completely honest with you. I don't know a whole lot about this band. While walking around on Warped tour, we ventured out looking for some good music to listen to. A band had just started their set and the lead singer was trying to gather a crowd in- so we stayed and what not. They looked like a bunch of California boys in button ups, sunglasses and round hats (I later on found out that they were, indeed from California!) At first we stayed out of pity because there weren't half as many people at their stage as you would find at a Mayday Parade crowd. We actually listened and vibed along when we realized that the singer had a very unique and interesting voice. Probably one of the best we heard at Warped that day.

All songs on this EP are worth listening to and I do, however, wish that this was a full album. It's just that good.

SONGS YOU SHOULD HEAR:
Be It
Smoke And Mirrors
Other People
